Founded in 1963, West Potomac RFC is the 2nd oldest active rugby club in Washington, D.C. and the reigning PRU D3 Men's Champions. The team attracts many players with and without rugby playing experience who enjoy the club's close-knit social fellowship and enthusiastic level of play. West Pot is well known for its willingness to train new ruggers from scratch and fields a Division III men’s side and a Summer 7’s team as well as a Masters (35 and older) side. The club is registered with the national governing rugby body, USA Rugby, and competes in the Potomac Rugby Union (PRU), which includes clubs in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

West Pot players can often be found on invitational touring sides and we have sent teams to play in New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Wales, Amsterdam, Taiwan, and France. International tours are an important tradition of amateur and professional rugby teams alike, as they give players the opportunity to bond with teammates and test themselves against better teams and regional styles of play.

In addition to men’s rugby, West Pot is currently working with interested parties to organize a women’s club as well as developing relationships with several local youth, high school, and college teams in the area to support the growth of the sport and strengthen the organization’s ties to the community.

Membership

West Pot has a registered membership of over 100 individuals. With over four decades of history in the D.C. area, the club has developed a robust network of fans, former players, and active social members in addition to the gentlemen who suit up to play each weekend. The majority of the club members are college-educated males between 21 and 35 years of age and this group includes a diverse mix of professionals, government employees, and small business owners. The club also has also been noted for its close ties with the armed forces and the current roster includes active members of the Army, Marines, and Navy stationed in or around Washington, D.C.

Community Service & Social Events

Off the field, team members can be found engaged in numerous social and service activities. Recently, the club has volunteered its time and resources to support the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, international tsunami relief efforts, and youth recreation centers, as well as supplying qualified coaches and referees to local youth rugby programs.

In 2004, the WPRFC players and social members entered a crew into the inaugural D.C. Dragonboat Festival and team’s strong performance on the water (as well as its boisterous behavior on land) earned the club an invitation from the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Representative Office to compete in Formosa Dragon Boat Invitational, a prestigious regatta held in Tainan, Taiwan.

From our annual Awards Banquet in February to our Holiday Party in December, WPRFC hosts numerous team functions and open socials where we invite local rugby fans and newcomers watch televised matches, have a few pints, and enjoy the brotherhood of rugby off the pitch.
