West Potomac had excellent participation this past Sunday at the 19th Alexandria Red Cross Waterfest. We had 15 volunteers present to help check IDs, serve beer and drink beer for this fun fundraiser while boogying along with Peaches and Herb (remember them Old Boys?)

We found ourselves in an unusual predicament during the 1st half of our shift. We actually had too many of us trying to serve beer and too few drinkers! Well, we corrected that imbalance and helped generate some Red Cross funds in no time while building strong beer bellies too. It sure felt unnatural on the wrong side of the bar. No wonder Sully gets grumpy at work!
Even though the cops had us ruggers under their watchfull eye all day, everyone did a fine job. Linda and Erin even busted an underage drinker and had the cops kick the young thing out. It all started when Nutter 1.0 refused to serve her a beer! (What's the world coming to? The end?)
The organizers were very pleased with our participation and the Beverage Committee Chairman quickly invited us back next year, asking us to help out during the "prime time" shifts on Saturday. I hope this can become a West Potomac tradition.
A big thanks to Bill K for the t-shirts and banner. Thanks to the Paul and Beefa for getting the t-shirts and Sully of Sullivan's Emerald Isle for the delicious malt beverages afterwards, and to the following who attended: Edgar B, Jack H, Craig B, Jake and Linda, Neale, Bill and Erin, Nutter 1.0 and 2.0 (Rob and Sam), Eddie Ski, Matt S, Sully, Paul and Beefa.
If any of you have any suggestions for volunteering at any other events, please let me know. We met a lot of very nice people who were very curious about rugby as well as several possible new recruits.
